The Balkan restaurant first fired up its grill on Banff Avenue in 1982. This iconic Banff restaurant was the creation of Greek families out of their element in the cold Canadian Rockies who wished to bring the authentic flavors and warm festive atmosphere of the Mediterranean to this high mountain town.  Our fiery, contemporary interior features crumbling rock walls, walnut accents, private window seats, huge hard wood communal tables and a beautiful river rock granite bar.

We believe that dining should be an experience unto itself. Our establishment is the embodiment of the Greek philosophy of philoxenia (Greek friendship). Friendly, local service, showcasing the best in Greek and Banff hospitality greet all of our guests.  Greek culinary expert Joanna Karlos prides herself in creating the freshest cuisine using only quality ingredients that are the staple of the healthy Mediterranean diet.  

The combination of Yiayia Joanna's family recipes and contemporary Greek cuisine have created favorites like fall off the bone slow roasted lamb shank, delicious seafood dishes, grilled Hercules swords, steaks, charbroiled housemade pita, fanatastic Greek share platters, tender fried kalamari, flaming saganaki and much more. Our master mixologists mix up some of the valleys finest cocktails from classics like Whiskey Sours and hand muddled Mojitos to new favorites like our summer fresh fruit infusions and warm winter cocktails.  Western Canada's largest selection of boutique wines from Greece will entice your palate and pair beautifully with our citrus inspired cuisine.  Lunch, dinner or anytime through the day is a unique and fun dining experience at the Balkan.
